Fahrenheit to Celsius formula

The NIST SI Units – Temperature page gives this relation. Dividing by 1.8 is the same as multiplying by 5/9.

Formula: °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9.

The converter multiplies and divides by 5 and 9, then rounds the displayed result to two decimal places.

Example: 68 °F is (68 − 32) × 5/9 = 20 °C. The converter shows 20.00 C.

Fahrenheit to Celsius examples

Oven temperature: A recipe that says 350 °F is (350 − 32) × 5/9 = 176.67 °C.

Room temperature: A thermostat set to 72 °F is 22.22 °C.

Thermometer reading: 98.6 °F is 37 °C. The converter shows 37.00 C.

Quick mental math (approximation)

To estimate Celsius, subtract 30 from the Fahrenheit temperature and halve the result. Example: 70 °F minus 30 is 40, halved is about 20 °C. The exact result is 21.11 °C.

This shortcut is an approximation and only works near everyday weather temperatures. It is exact at 50 °F and drifts as you move away: at 86 °F it gives 28 °C instead of 30 °C, and at an oven temperature of 350 °F it gives 160 °C instead of 176.67 °C. Use the converter or the exact formula for cooking, medical readings, or anything you will record.

Fahrenheit to Celsius FAQ

Why subtract 32 before multiplying?
32 °F is the same temperature as 0 °C. Subtracting 32 measures how far the reading is above freezing in Fahrenheit degrees, and multiplying by 5/9 converts that distance to Celsius degrees.

What is 0 °F in Celsius?
0 °F is (0 − 32) × 5/9, which the converter shows as −17.78 °C.

Is there a temperature where Fahrenheit and Celsius are the same?
Yes. −40 °F is exactly −40 °C. Solving (F − 32) × 5/9 = F gives F = −40.
